Music

Led by Lily Thompson, our Worship Director since 2018.

What we sing

A mix of hymns rearranged for a band and contemporary songs, plus about four originals written by people in this church. Roughly a quarter of what we sing on a Sunday is older than 1900. We try to keep keys singable by ordinary voices rather than by the person on stage.

The teams

• Band — two rotations of six, playing every other week. Keys, acoustic, electric, bass, drums, and whatever else shows up.
• Vocal team — three or four voices per Sunday, drawn from a pool of eighteen.
• Vespers choir — about twenty-five singers, unaccompanied, rehearsing Sunday at 4:30 before the 6:00 PM service. No audition for the choir; if you can hold a part, you're in.
• Franklin team — a separate band of five led by Renee Alvarez's husband, Dan.

Auditions

Band and vocal auditions happen twice a year, in August and January. Fifteen minutes, two songs of your choosing, and Lily will tell you honestly where you are. Being told "not this round" is common and is not a judgment about you; several people on the team now auditioned twice.

Rehearsal

Thursday 7:00 PM for the Sunday you're playing, plus a 7:45 AM call on Sunday. Charts go out the previous Sunday night.

Tech

Sound, lights, and slides are run by a separate team of fourteen — no musical ability required, training provided, and it's the single easiest place to serve if you like being useful and invisible. Ask Lily and she'll pass you to the tech lead.
